background
"This is our Glasgow anthem. I still think it's so original and
recorded so well." - Charlie, 24th March 2015
"Feeling we needed to begin each and every show with an bang, Waterfront was
designed and calculated to do just that" - Jim
"The penny dropped unconsciously, subconsciously. You start to think: wouldn’t it be good to have one song that really worked
well in festivals and huge venues? Lo and behold the first song you write is Waterfront. You could say it was built for those places."
CB: The first thing that really, really kicked it off actually was – we had a bass amp
called a Dynachord and you could sample a note and it would repeat. I don't know why it was on a
bass amp – I've no clue – our bass player Derek had played
something, he was playing with it, and he started playing this rhythm and it's funny, we have a
friend who always says this: "Great bass line. You know, like one note! But great bass line!"
JK: In the early 80s, when we wrote Waterfront,
Glasgow kind of was on its knees. Since the war up to the mid 1970s, Glasgow was a powerhouse,
industrial engineering and especially shipyards, but by the early 1980s, one by one the shipyards
were coming down, Glasgow was coming down, this place was like a ghost town really. The typical
images that you see – miners striking or factory workings being made unemployed etc. – was very much
happening in Glasgow and it was indeed a sad and angry time, a desperate time.
JK: And I used to like walking along here, as sad as it was, and this particular night,
the summer of 1983, August, a beautiful night, the river was flowing and – I don't know there was
something about it that made me think about cyclical things – things don't just come to an end.
Symbolically one of the things about industry coming here was that the river was polluted beyond
belief. It was a dead river. But when the industry went after a few years, the salmon were coming
back to the river. A week later and Derek Forbes, our bass
player, came up with this throbbing pulse, and it just sounded amazing, it felt amazing, it felt
built for big venues, it actually felt like a steamship or something, it really had this size to it.
And I don't know if my walk here, and my thoughts of the river, and all this stuff – I immediately
started writing words. And within half an hour, we had this song,
Waterfront.
CB: Waterfront was a strange one because,
on top of this big bass pulse, there was this big hit on the piano and then the guitar plays this heavy
line. It's a bit like "BANG... de de de-de" – things all happen and it's the big combination of all
the parts that make up the music really. The verse is just guitar chords and that's something
straightforward but all the rest of it is a very unusual song actually.
JK: We used to start playing bigger venues and festivals and all that stuff and
you need one or two things that really work and if you're going to play a club you need a funky
track, if you're going to play a stadium you need something with a big picture to fill it.
JK: And the thing we were saying earlier, it's still a great ... and sometimes
we're playing a festival and maybe the band before us have gone down a storm and you have to
follow it then we'll say "We'll start with Waterfront."
And the ball's immediately in the net.

"Released 33 years ago in November '83, of all the Simple Minds songs it is Waterfront has
consistently given me the most pleasure to play live. No matter the format, be it full on rock, acoustic, or with
an orchestral arrangement, it is this anthemic "non song" - and it is not really a song in any traditional sense - that
takes me to places that no other does. Manic Street Preacher's James Dean Bradfield has
offered some eloquent quotes about the origins of the song. However the lyrics which incidentally came to me almost
in a dream, one summer evening while walking through some dilapidated factory/warehouses that sat alongside the banks
of the River Clyde in Glasgow - are still mysterious even to me. So what is the song about?
I guess it is a song about some kind of renewed faith. A reinforced feeling that no matter how lost you might be
feeling, no matter the lows or the clouds of depressions, that there is absolutely always the opportunity to find
yourself once again. That nothing is permanent after all, and that "the wheel" keeps turning - and that it always
will. Much like the flowing waters of the Clyde itself." - Jim, November 23rd, 2016
JL: Will it continue with your family? Are they into music?
JK: Well, I'm not sure it will with my immediate family, my kids, because they're interested in other things. But with the grandkids and stuff, who knows?
I mean, I didn't know – I asked my dad: "You didn't play anything, mum didn't play anything. How come there's no music." And he said "What are you talking about?
Your aunties and uncles could play anything." Who knows but looking at the Clyde now, and thinking about Glasgow, I'm wondering if this city will produce more music
in the future. Will the city produce music wherever it is? This city's always had to reinvent itself. Simple Minds have always had to reinvent themselves. And
the river itself – I've always found something symbolic in that. I think it probably takes us to the song Waterfront –
why we are here.
JK: The story goes – or the reality behind the song was – in 1983/1984 Glasgow was on its knees. It hadn't quiet turned the corner yet and it was still
coming out of this post-industrial [phase] – it wasn't the Glasgow we know now as we look at all these new buildings, and all the activities, the hip-and-happening
Glasgow. It was going through a very tough time. And Simple Minds, at that time, had started to tour a lot, becoming estranged from Glasgow, but we just
weren't here very much, we were out doing what we do.
JK: But I remember coming back, it was a beautiful summer's night. This stretch here was full of old factory buildings, really they were like ghosts or tombstones
to a previous age. There was something sad about it. It felt like the place had come to an end. However, on that night when I came, it was a most beautiful night,
walking up and down here, it was cobbled – there were all these cobbled roads then – and the river was still flowing, the sun was out, I just had this feeling of,
somehow, hope. Dunno what it was. I should also say I was listening – on the Sony Walkman – to this new track that Derek Forbes,
our bass player, had come up with. This powerful track that just, to me, sounded the way the sound inside a steam engine on a boat, and being here and all this
stuff, being on the waterfront... I dunno. I went back home and I wrote this song about rebirth: Water still flowing, time past, time still to come, a million
years from now... This stuff just poured out in a stream of consciousness. Because it's not really a song
Waterfront, it's just a big effect, this defiant chant of things go in a circle and – if the song's about anything that's
what it's about.

JK: So, we wanted to be a great live band. And we wanted to go and take it around the world.
That's still what we want to do. And still the challenge we have to deal with every night. But I think - in terms
of the big thing - before Glastonbury got mega here - there were huge festivals in Holland and Belgium
80,000 and 90,000 people - and we would turn up at that stage - say it would be the middle of the afternoon - and
we'd come across real good. But we'd watch people we loved - people like Van Morrison,
Elvis Costello or someone like that - as good as they were, it wasn't quite built for that. And I think
we thought - we never had meetings about it, but you think subliminally - you know what, we're going to need
different sonics here if you're going to get across to all of this. And lo and behold,
Waterfront would appear.
JE: Waterfront, it really kicks you in the gut doesn't it?
CB: Yeah, it really does, it's a really unusual kind of track. And it's an amazing sounding record.
JE: And it was also a blessing to every school band in the eighties. Because the bass player's like
"Thank you!"
JK: It's a very original [bass] line isn't it? [Laughs]
CB: You need a lot of training for that line [Laughs]
JK: You don't need Pavarotti to sing it either. [Laughs]
JE: Well, it helps if you're Jim Kerr. That's a proper
'hairs on the back of your arms' standing up one, where you want to be with the crowds, singing along.
CB: It was funny how it came together, Waterfront. It kind
of fell together, strangely enough. Because, again, I still think with a song like that -
Jim and I still don't really know if it's a song.
JK: It's a poem Charlie.
CB: It's kind of, again, there's elements of what we did in the early days, where the bass line just
runs all the way through it. There's stuff that riffs off of that here and there.
JE: It's got it musically. It's got a lot to do with rock. It's got that solid "dom dom dom", driving
through it.
JK: I think it's a great piece of music. I can say this because I wasn't involved in the music.
I just remember - the first time we played it live, we went into rehearse a couple of days
prior to going to Dublin, it was our first tour to play with
U2 who were coming back from - it was a homecoming tour - it was the first time they had been
outdoors in Ireland. And they'd just had their first break through in America - gold disc and all that - so
it was a big, big deal. And they'd invited a few bands over to play at their event in Phoenix Park. And
we'd gone in to rehearse for that. And, well, when we were in there, the bass player started to come up
with Mouldy Old Dough...
CB: [Laughs]
JE: Lieutenant Pigeon! Their mum played piano!
JK: We were like "What is it with Mouldy Old Dough?"
CB: The B-side, Desperate Dan, is exactly the same tune [Laughs]
JK: But then the guy started playing, and then Mel, and
Charlie with the chimes and all that, and I thought I couldn't
see it being a song and I thought "This would be a great intro music" - an intro music to something. And
it would be a great opener. And the previous week I'd been in Glasgow, at Clydeside, and -
Derek's sound sounded like inside a steam engine or one of
those big cargo boats - I have this whole water thing going on. And the city being reborn again, the river
always flows.
JE: It's great that you're painting these pictures in your mind. "Come in, come out of the rain."
JK: Yeah, all those images. I could feel that atmosphere in it and I guess in my notebook I had that.
So, we had this chant, this "Come in, come out of the rain" thing. The song wasn't fully written - we hadn't
finished writing it. And yet, we decided, in Dublin, to start the set with it. Because it'll be an intro
tape that we're playing.
JE: Good for the sound guys. It starts with the bass and then ...
JK: There you go. And maybe the crowd will get into it, who knows? But it shows how adventurous we
were to go on with a new song. "Yeah, we're playing a song that isn't written yet!" And we went on. And people
went mental, onto the rhythm with it, we knew we were on to something. And then we had to go back and work out
with Steve what it was.
JE: I guess that heralded a lot of people's first ever introduction to Simple Minds. Which was,
I guess you guys would class, is the stadium kind of rock.
JK: That era.

RP: Success is cemented with the top 20 hit Waterfront. With
the characteristic Derek Forbes bass - as you say "rumbling" along - surely
it was you who came up with that idea?
DF: I did. Jim will tell you that.
Mick,
Charlie and
Jim were in London.
Mel was in London. And I was at home in Glasgow. They
were doing different things and then they came into a rehearsal room and I was to go down and meet
them so I went down to hear the new stuff. Charlie and
Mick used to write wee parts together and I would come up with
basslines all the time - it wasn't a problem for me to do that. As soon as I heard the drummer, you could
tap your feet and I would write something to it. They knew I'd be there when it came to it. I'd just bought
this Dynacord combo amp with a switch on it that could record a sample - a second and a half - and I just went
"Da da, da da."
DF: I got that and then I played my fretless on the top. And then "Dum dum deeee". The harmonic. That's all
fretless. That's what I took to them. And Jim said "What's that Dan?" in
the studio. And I said "That's something I wrote on my own." And he said "Mel? Can
you play along with it?" And Mel played along. And he said
"Mick, can you do something with that? Can you play along with Dan? The melody?"
So the two of them are playing that, and then Charlie came in, with "Daa Daa".
"What's that chord Charlie?" "We'll put that in." We'd written it in no time. At
the end of the rehearsal. So we just wrote it - that was it.
DF: And we played it the next day. Because we were rehearsing to go
to Phoenix Park as special guests of U2. And we'd played it
the next day - me with that wee amp, we'd hit the right spot. We just go "De de de de".
RP: I mean the structure's always there. You can change it. It's such a great structure isn't it? My goodness, these
just come around out of the blue every so often. You don't get them every day. That's such a good structure of music
isn't it? Did that come before the lyrics?
DF: That all came before the lyrics. I got all the music together. And then the guys just played along
with me doing that. And then we worked out different parts - you know the stabs - "Bam bam". Which is a huge part
of it as well. And Mel doing is "So far, so good" bit with the drums.
RP: You've got the steady bass going through which is brilliant. And you can add these splashes can't you?
It just works so well.
DF: There's a slap I've got in the middle. It's better when it's up high in the mix - then you can hear that.
I'm doing that with slap and it just sounds like helicopters coming because it was really percussive. When I'm doing
it live I make sure people hear that bit.
RP: It's such a great bassline. You must be so proud of it. Simple, but effective.
DF: Simple, but there are four parts to it. People just think its "de de, de de, de de". That's it. But there's
all that melody. I play all that when I play it live.

Get in, get out of the rain,
I'm goin' to move on up to the waterfront.
Step in, step out of the rain,
I'm goin' to walk on up to the waterfront.
Said, one million years from today,
I'm goin' to step on up to the waterfront.
Get in, get out of the rain,
Come in, come out of the rain.
So far, so good, so close, yet still so far,
So far, so good, so close, yet still so,
So far, so far, so far.
The rain, I'm going to move on up to the waterfront.
Step in, step out of the rain,
I'm going to walk on up to the waterfront.
Said, one million years from today,
Step on up to the waterfront.
Said, come in, come out of the rain.
Said, come in, come out of the rain.
Said, come in, come out of the rain.
I'm goin' to move on up to the front.
I'm goin' to walk on up to the front.
I'm goin' to live on up by the front.
I'm goin' to walk on up to the front.
Come in, come out of the rain.
Come in, come out of the rain.
Said, come in, come out of the rain.
Come in, come out of the rain.
Move on up, to step on up,
Walk on up, live on up,
Far away, far away, far away.
So, walk away, so far, I walk away.
So, so, walk away, up to the waterfront.
Up to the waterfront.
So far, so far.
