40 years of hits tour 2020

Simple Minds celebrate 40 iconic years in music by embarking upon a major world tour in 2020.

To celebrate 40 iconic years in music Simple Minds will be embarking upon a major world tour in 2020. What kind of show do you have planned?

"Again, I think we will be playing two sets, so we will be playing a lot of music. We are going to have to tick all the boxes that I said to you, and people will hear all the big songs you would expect, but we have got to keep our hardcore fans happy as well, and maybe play two or three songs that either they have never heard us play, never expected us to play, or haven't heard for a long time – so we will do that. We are only just starting to think about it now, but the very title of the tour and the fact it's forty years - it has to be all-encompassing, and again, as I was saying, it has to show us as still full of energy and vitality forty years later. We somehow have to bring the whole culture of Simple Minds into these two and a half hours." - Jim, XNoise Interview with Mark Millar, October 2019

"I think there is a lot of mileage in [the current lineup] still – they are the greatest people, and they have brought a lot of energy. They are the ones who are feeding us just now. We have had so many great line ups, but I think right now the lineup we had in the states, there is a lot of mileage still in that." - Jim, XNoise Interview with Mark Millar, October 2019

The band will be peforming two sets of their greatest hits so there will be no support at these shows.

"Simple Minds have experienced a remarkable journey since releasing their debut album Life in a Day in 1979. Constantly evolving, the band's rousing choruses and booming atmospherics made them one of the most iconic bands of the Eighties. Along the way, they've landed five UK #1 albums, topped the singles charts on both sides of the Atlantic, sold over 60 million albums and packed stadiums the world over."

"But the story didn't end there. After taking some time out, they returned revitalised and resurgent with the 2014 album Big Music and have maintained that upward momentum ever since. They claimed the Q Inspiration Award that same year, which was followed by an Ivor Novello in 2016. And when last year's Walk Between Worlds album crashed into the UK charts at #4, it represented their highest position in 23 years. No wonder that the Manic Street Preachers, Moby, Primal Scream and many others cite Simple Minds as a vital inspiration."

Attention!

Just to be clear.

If you are coming to see Simple Minds over these next few months as we tour continental Europe/UK/Ireland. Be aware that we are playing two sets at each show - with a brief intermission.

No opening act. (We are our own opening act I guess?)

Instead we will play anywhere from between 26 - 30 songs each night, depending on venue curfew times.

In order to make sure you don't miss any of the show, you might want to make plans to get to the venue early, or at least check this site on the day of each appointed show, where information on stage time for that night will be available.

Cannot tell you how much we are looking forward to it.

And as always, thanks to all who are coming to see Simple Minds live.

"Now only weeks away from the start of our year long tour, and it feels great having 'all our gang' back together. Rehearsals are well in hand and we are looking forward to the months ahead with even more enthusiasm than usual. Along with Ged, Gordy, Sarah, Cherisse, Charlie, and yours truly, it is always a pleasure to welcome a new addition to our ever evolving line-up. So welcome to you Berenice Scott! We know how much you'll enjoy performing in front of all who come to see Simple Minds.

"What more to say? Dates are still being added in what is shaping up to be one of our most extensive tours ever. So look out for us in your corner of the world - we are bound to pop up somewhere near you sooner or later." - Jim, 17th February 2020

"Watching a 'master' do their work is always impressive. Whether it's an orator working a crowd or an athlete contorting their body with ease and finesse, it's incredible to see what people are capable of. We see these things and wonder how they managed to do it? But the answer, in every instance, is simple. They did the work!"

"Charlie Burchill does 'the work.' I've known him since the day his mother gifted him his first guitar, and rarely a day passes without him playing/practicising his instruments."

"That's right, all these years later, no change. No matter what successes or rewards that has come his way, he still works every bit as hard on his skill. Always trying to better, looking to improve."

"Although I don't know everybody we've worked with as well as I know Charlie, I know them well enough to see that the same character trait applies. Fact is, every musician you might have seen on stage with Simple Minds through the years, works incessantly on their skills. Doing so without mentioning it, or looking for added recognition." - Jim, 11th February 2020

"Confession time! As crucial as rehearsals are to what we do, it would be a lie to say that I ever enjoy them that much. Somehow rehearsals for a gig, i.e. us playing a ton of songs without a crowd in front? Feels to me like practicing swimming without water! Not the case at the moment though. Loving these days as we countdown to the tour start. Also loving Cherisse Ossei's new bass drum 'skin.' Unfortunately caught me trying to nick the spare... I only wanted it to hang on my own little studio wall!" - Jim, 14th February 2020

"Less than one week to go until Simple Minds begin our most extensive tour to date. Beginning in Norway in what is still the start of the year, ending in New Zealand around Christmas, we'll be doing all to make it as great as possible for everyone who has bought tickets to see Simple Minds live. Thanks to all of you, and as always we appreciate the support!"

Tour merchandise and programmes were made available online through the official shop on the 4th March. This included a short video of the band looking through the new tour programme:

Hanging Around Books released Pleasantly Disturbed, a book of early photographs of Simple Minds in 1978, on the first day of the tour.

40: Best Of: 1979-2019 was released when the tour was announced and features 40 career-spanning hits.

"Scandinavian countries were among the first to embrace the sound of Simple Minds and for that we will always be grateful. As far back as 1979 we made our first trip to Denmark. Followed by a visit to Sweden some months later, before then getting our chance to perform in Norway a couple of years later again. The excitement of those trips resonate vividly with us to this day, never forgetting the intensity of those first sweat soaked nights, performing to packed club audiences in Gothenburg, Stockholm, Malmo, Copenhagen and Oslo. Two weeks from today, and four decades later from first stepping foot in Scandinavia, we will begin our latest world tour. Every bit excited now as we were back then!" - Jim, 14th February 2020

"Ten years is a long time to remain committed to doing your best. But that is exactly what Ged Grimes has managed to do during his soon-to-be decade - long tenure playing bass with Simple Minds. As impressive off stage - as on. I find myself naturally looking up to Ged. And not just because he towers over me physically. His solid dedication to getting things done absolutely right, somehow rubs off on the rest of us. And in doing so he helps us become better. In music and in life." - Jim, 25th February 2020

"Now about to perform on his fourth tour with Simple Minds, Gordy Goudie has been involved in various roles with Simple Minds for much longer than many people know."

"It was twenty years ago that Gordy joined me for a couple of weeks in Taormina, Sicily, to work on some new ideas. Although nothing specific was planned, some of those ideas became the basis of our Cry album. Gordy in turn became co-producer of that release, and our relationship has continued ever since."

"With talent to burn on guitars/keys/programmer/harmonica and more, Gordy also knows how to harmonise perfectly. His standout songwriting skills also featured on some of our albums. Further to all of that. In moments of frustration when things are not working out the way you hoped they would, we can depend on "gentle Gordy" to bring a calmness to the tension in the room. All of which makes me think that Gordy's main talent is as a creative facilitator. And if you are wondering what that means in our case? "A facilitator is someone who helps to bring about an outcome by providing indirect or unobtrusive assistance, guidance, and supervision." With all that being so, its kind of obvious why we love having Gordy Goudie - a real good guy - travelling around with us!" - Jim, 26th February 2020

Thanks to all who helped get this first show up and running, including Simple Minds' crew, as well the locals here in Stavanger. "Thanks to all who posted, and bigger thanks still to all for helping us to get off to a fine start to 2020 world tour. Now arrived in snowy Oslo for the last of our concerts in Norway, very much looking forward to the two sold out shown in the capital city - tonight and tomorrow. "Snowing outside, but inside the temperature was rising. Again, we could not have asked for a better reaction to our first Oslo gig. More to come tonight as we perform the last of the Norwegian shows. As always we will do our best! Thanks to all who came to see us last night. Also to those who posted" - Jim, 2nd March 2020

"World's best? In response to kind comments, we certainly have 'the world's best' among our road/technical crew who work so hard in enabling us to give our best every night. Tonight in Oslo is our fourth show in a row, and considering some of the treacherous (wintry) conditions involved in moving the show around from city to city, it's important for us to recognise the efforts of all involved. Added kudos to the truck/bus/car drivers at the wheel, for safely getting us around. Talking about effort? Consider drummer, Cherisse Osei. (The Pocket Rocket!) Four in a row - means that over these last days - including gigs and soundchecks etc - she will have battered those drums for more than 12 hours solidly. And smiled throughout! She's phenomenal...End of story!" - - Jim, 2nd March 2020

"As a country that has welcomed Simple Minds since our earliest days - it was on a trip to Sweden that I wrote the lyrics to our song New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84)) - guaranteed in return we will want to conjure up all our energies in delivering memorable shows. (Gothenburg, Stockholm, Malmo.)"

"Meanwhile, well done to keyboardist, Berenice Scott. Performing four shows so far with Simple Minds, but already she carries it all off perfectly. That's talent! Sweden is now about to see and hear just how good she is."

"Thanks to our fans in Norway. We won't forget these nights! See you need time" - Jim, 3rd March 2020

"Friend to many. Great friend and collaborator to me. But at the end of the day, Charlie is always his 'own man.' As a guitarist, his style puts him in a category of one. Unique! But I don't need to tell you that. Also don't need to tell you how much we are looking forward to beginning our series of Swedish concerts. First one up is Gothenburg - and tonight can't come quick enough for us!" - Jim, 4th March 2020

"40 years after we first excitedly played in a tiny club in Gothenburg, you could still feel an excitement in the air as we walked on stage last night. Thanks to all of you for making it so!" - Jim, 5th March 2020

"Stockholm will always loom large in the history of Simple Minds, since some of our most memorable nights on stage occurred right here. From the smallest club venues, (Only 20 years old when first performing in Stockholm) going all the way to a stadium show, the locals wholly encouraged us with their enthusiasm for our music."

"Maybe we will have a chance to re-connect over this weekend with some of those who go all the way back to those days with us, while also initiating a bond with newer fans who are possibly seeing Simple Minds for the first time. In any case, thanks to all who are coming to see us in Stockholm tonight and tomorrow."

"Re: tonight's set list? (We try to never play the exact same set.) It seems appropriate that for the first time in quite a few years we should play Street Fighting Years. And why not? When considering that today sees the release of Street Fighting Years – our classic album remastered and boxed with a bonus disc of edits, B-sides and remixes, two CDs of the legendary "Live From Verona" concert plus a hardback book and fold-out poster. Also on new gatefold 180 gram 2LP, 2CD deluxe and single CDs" - Jim, 6th March 2020

"Time to wave goodbye to our friends and fans in Sweden, and in turn say hello to all in Denmark. What a weekend! Between the Stockholm shows and then last night in Malmo, we've been spoiled by the reaction from the audiences. Thanks to all of you!" - Jim, 9th March 2020

Due to Coronavirus restrictions limiting hall audience sizes to 1000, the band played two concerts: one at 7PM and one at 10PM.

Looking back now I remember that only a few days earlier I had told the New York Times: "Simple Minds never cancel. We work with a lot of bright people and I'm certain we'll find a way around this thing. The tour will definitely go on."

Despite the heartbreaking images already coming out of Italy, I was evidently in denial by saying so. And with no clue as to what might happen next from country to country, I was equally out of my depth.

Best to stay quiet sometimes, I guess?

Nevertheless, a mere ten shows into a planned ten month tour, our worst fears materialised as international restrictions kicked-in all around. Meaning that the only journey we would be making after our show that night in Copenhagen, would be taking us back home. Game over. Tour postponed!

Just as I was getting used to telling myself that after more than 40 years of touring, I had most likely already experienced all that there was? I concluded that this was something none of us were prepared for. Shops closed? Borders shutting in Scandinavia? Hotels with padlocked doors? Compulsory masks? Social distancing? Washing hands continually? Whole cities had unbelievably emptied out before our eyes?

Film director David Lynch might have been able to conjure up such a vision prior for the purposes of entertainment? But this was no movie. This was 'Real Life Baby.'

Finally arriving back in Glasgow, late evening, one day later. I had asked the 'masked driver' who had picked me up at the deserted airport to stop at the nearest supermarket. I wanted to buy some fruit. "I'm telling you Jim. There will be f*ck all left. The shelves are empty. People are panic buying. It's insane. You're a veggie though? There might be some celery left? This is Glesga' and naebody really eats that crap. Apart from you, if you are lucky enough to find some that is?"

Not only had he made me smile, he was right. The shelves were almost empty. As for fresh produce? A whole rack of limp looking celery was indeed about all that remained in Sainsbury's. So I bought some.

And I also bought an already opened pack of lentils, the very last one at that.

(A lifetime ago, staying for a few months in a damp Parisienne flat, and with little money between three of us. I had discovered that good old lentils were always cheap. As a result I had learned to make a mean daal with very few ingredients.) In any case, looking around the store that night in Glasgow March 2020, I could not help but flashback to the mostly 'threadbare' shops I'd visited in 'Communist bloc Eastern Germany' back in the late 70's.

Again I thought WTF! A dream? Or is this real life?

Home at last, I went to bed immediately. And as soon as daylight snuck through the curtains, I began loading some things into the car. Not forgetting the lentils of course. Driving north towards the studio, I could see that there was snow around but I badly wanted to get some 'thinking done,' hopefully while out hiking among the surrounding hills and lochs. Doing so I clearly recall listening in as politicians on the radio were discussing a possible 'nationwide lockdown.'

It was the first I had ever heard of such a thing.

And as they vaguely mulled over how long that could go on for?

I found myself thinking. Weeks? A whole month maybe? Surely no more? People won't put up with more than that...Will they?

"Only yesterday I was asked 'Which gig are you looking forward to most on the upcoming tour?' The diplomatic answer is that I am looking forward to them all, but it is also a genuine response. That question was then followed by 'What it is like to play in your hometown, do you enjoy it?' Again only positives to be said about playing in Glasgow, (our hometown) and I have yet to come across any artists who do not rave about their experience of playing in Scotland."

"The SSE Hydro (arena/venue) in Glasgow is where we will finish this year's Winter/Spring leg of our tour, and no better place for me to end a tour. Apart from the fact that after months of touring, I'll get to sleep in my own bed, the venue which is fairly new to the city, first opening its doors in 2013, happens to be a true favourite of ours."

"As for the city itself? Well, its the place that made us. It will be always be 'sacred'... to us!"

"Although Simple Minds have already performed on that Hydro stage a few times to date, I have also witnessed a number of memorable shows from some of the world's best - in my opinion. Among concerts from Prince, U2, The Who and Fleetwood Mac, one show above all stands out. That was when Arcade Fire showed up at the Hydro in April '18. I was mesmerised by their live set that night. Band, audience, music, production, all contributing to produce a result that only the greatest live concerts can produce." - Jim, 27th January 2020

JK: ... And what's really good about this is that the European tour, or the British European tour, ends in Glasgow...
BS: No, no pressure then?
JK: No pressure. Real party time. But, at the same time, it can't just be a party. It has to be absolutely serious. Normally, when we play in Glasgow, as fate would have it, the last few times we'll be playing in Dublin or Aberdeen the next night, which means that after the gig, I never really see anybody. Because if you've just done your two hours on stage, then you're going to stand talking - as evitable, even more in Glasgow, I want to see everyone and talk to everybody - then you'd have no voice left the next night. Well, I don't have to worry about that at this time.

Nocturne, Blenheim Palace, Oxford, UK
19th June 2020
Support: Deacon Blue

"Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire will have witnessed many memorable nights within its long history. Our challenge is to add to that when we turn up there for the first of our summer concerts on Friday 19th June. What's more? Well, although fortunate enough in our time to share the concert bill with many who knew how how to put on great live sets, few of them managed to illicit the ecstatic reaction from an audience as Deacon Blue did when we toured together a decade ago. All in all then, it looks set to be a very special open - air show at beautiful Blenheim Palace. We hope to see you there!" - Jim, 20th February 2020

"To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily, is not to have seen Italy at all" Wrote Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in his memoir 'Italian Journey.' (1817)

"That memoir became one of the world's first ever travel books, and unlike some of my teenage colleagues who were in awe with science fiction writing, from a young age I always seemed to be more drawn to travel literature."

"It was through reading that I could travel in my mind. Absorbing stories and experiences from those talented enough to paint pictures with words, I still like to listen to people's travel stories, and we all have them."

"Longtime friend and fan of Simple Minds, Antonio Chemi, tells a nice story about travelling all the way from Sicily to Rome, in February 1986. Not yet 16 and already passionate about Simple Minds' music, Antonio harangued his parents for approval to attend Simple Minds' (now legendary) gigs at Paleaur, in Rome."

"Chemi's (over protective) father, Giovanni, although initially negative with regards to the idea of his son travelling alone from a small provincial town to the big city, finally relented after observing just how much the chance to see Simple Minds meant to his son."

"There would be one catch however? Antonio would only be allowed to make the 750 km train journey on the condition that Giovanni - who had no interest in Simple Minds, or any kind of rock music whatsoever - accompanied him to the concert, and would remain next to him throughout with a watchful eye."

"Although not exactly what Antonio had in mind, from that scenario a beautiful tale begins. A tale best told by Antonio as he reminisces still excited today at the memory of coming across other other young Sicilians en route to Rome by train to see Simple Minds."

"Hopefully you'll be able to hear more of that story in the near future, since in someways what unfolded would later influence the story of my life. It also influenced what I consider to be the 'rebirth of Simple Minds.' Meanwhile, Antonio will only have to walk few minutes from his house to see Simple Minds perform in Taormina, Sicily, this coming July. No over night train journeys this time. And if he leaves the windows open, he (and the rest of the town) will be able to hear every note from our afternoon soundcheck as we prepare nearby for our show at the incomparable Teatro Greco." - Jim, 19th February 2020
