Festival Show Tour 2010

The Festival Show Tour 2010 continued the Graffiti Soul theme, taking Simple Minds from well travelled mainland European haunts to a rare, and extremely well received, visit to Brazil.

The tour was bookended and interleaved by Jim’s solo tours under his Lostboy! AKA guise. The thrill of quickly demoing and touring new material with his new venture precipitated a similar brief outing for Simple Minds with Stagefright and Fire Fighter taking pride of place as concert openers at Bataclan in France.

Simple Minds at Pordenone. With thanks to Daniele

The band also performed their biggest gig in France, playing to 80,000 fans at La Fete de L’Huma in Paris on the last night of the tour. However, the event was overshadowed by the absence of Eddie Duffy who’d quit the band in the week following the Polo Rocks gig in Germany. Lostboy! AKA bass player Ged Grimes was quickly drafted in for the final show.

"A really good night, good crowd, fresh band, great weather, good feelings throughout as the sort built up nicely one song after the other. It felt like summer last night. It felt like some sort of party, some kind of celebration!" - Jim

Ghostdancing was the final track on the set-list but wasn't played.

"Sun is shining but still a chill breeze around the harbour where I have just walked. Not many around really, but that suits me fine and is preferable to walking through busy cities. People are nice here. You somehow notice people in small places. Humanity is still visible and it encourages to dwell on the things that really matter."

"The walk this afternoon was very pleasant even if I noticed that my legs surprisingly felt a little tired. Surprising until I consider that tonight will make it twelve shows in around fifteen days. I am not that tired though and will still give my best tonight." - Jim

Thanks to Stef and Thomas for the photos.

"Never had anything other than good nights here, we thought that this was particularly good. The audience were well into right from the start and least to me it seems that the band has found had a freshness also. It is a great set with reinvigorated versions of This Is It, Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), Mandela Day and She's A River. The addition of three new songs on the horizon will make the set even fresher. Simple Minds are moving into the future." - Jim

Thanks to Philippe for the set-list and to Stef for the photos.

"Even some of the French have not heard of this place, I however always look forward to playing here because the audiences are so responsive. Blistering gig leading on from last night's Lyon. Before the show I felt dead beat due to the fact it was the 14th show in about 18 days. Felt more than fine on stage though. Now a break for a few days. I probably need it!" - Jim

Thanks to Stef for the photos.

"Music from three songs (hope) to debut in Paris all come from the brain, heart and soul of Charlie Burchill. Only a year since the release of other great works from Charlie such as Moscow Underground, This Is It, Stars Will Lead The Way. For three decades plus Charlie has been cranking out inspirational music. Absolutely amazing artist he is!" - Jim

"Due to a lack of time we played two new songs as opposed to three. Started the set with Stagefright and led into Fire Fighter, a very warm reaction came our way. Magic night. Songs from thirty years came across as new songs and brand new songs fitted right in with the true classics. Entire set seems timeless. Band played better than ever. No argument with this, only an idiot could disagree. Great audience. Big thanks!" - Jim

Concrete And Cherry Blossom appeared on the set-lists between Rockets and Alive And Kicking but was dropped due to lack of time.

"Heading to Paris for the last gig of this tour. To be honest with Simple Minds there is no "last gig" as such. It just means the last gig before a break that inevitably leads to the next move forward and onwards into the future. Changes are always happening though and that will be apparent when we walk on stage in Paris. Nothing... in this world is permanent and change can be painful too. We call those kind of changes growing pains. It is all part of what we do!" - Jim

Simple Minds played to their largest French audience to date (numbering over 80,000). The gig was also broadcast simulataneously in excellent quality on France Bleu 107.1 although it only started mid-way through Waterfront.

However, the concert will go down in Simple Minds' history as being Ged Grimes' first Simple Minds gig, stepping into the breach after Eddie Duffy suddenly left the week before.

Thanks to Olix and Stef for the set-list.

Thanks to DJCM for the photos.
