The demo version was flat and uninspiring, being driven by the bass line instead of the classic synth riff which was added during the album sessions.

It was selected as the second single from the Sons And Fascination album reaching #47 in the UK chart and quickly became a live classic, duly appearing during most of the band's subsequent tours. (And most live versions kept its classic bubbling synth line.)

It was given a second chance as a single in 1992 where it was released as a double A-side single (along with Alive And Kicking) as promotion for the Glittering Prize 81/92 compilation album. A new mix of the track, internally called the Bright Mix at Virgin, was prepared by Charlie Burchill and Greg Jackman, especially for the single. Original producer Steve Hillage was also involved in the project. Unfortunatley his remix of the Bright Mix, called the Warm Mix, was never released.

Love Song was one of the sampler tracks given to artists by Chrysalis so it could be remixed as part of the Neapolis single campaign. It was duly remixed by Philadelphia Bluntz and Ultimate Lobotomy in a contemporary late-1990s spin, which saw the vast majority of the original song lost to tuneless, electronic overdubs.
