dusseldorf beat (demo)

composer
Words and music: Simple Minds

publisher
© 1989 Virgin Music (Publishers) Ltd

background
"I think the first track we finished didn't make it the album. It was titled "Dusseldorf Beat" because it had a rhythm track like La Dusseldorf, the experimental German band from the 1970s. It had a great vibe but it didn't come to much." - Jim - Street Fighting Years book.

One of the more euphoric demos from this period, Dusseldorf Beat is a lengthy instrumental demo. Very much in the style of the Street Fighting Years material, it features Charlie, Mick and John and Mel. The track does have a discernable verse-chorus structure and is classic Simple Minds.

It first appears as the fourth track of the first reel of the Street Fighting Years library in the Virgin archive. However, it is not a good recording, and suffers from distortion and lack of clarity.

Monitor Mix Instrumental #1 is of much better quality. Unlike many songs at this stage, it still hasn't got lyrics. Slightly overlong, the band don't start improvising until towards the end. And the end is also improvised with everyone gradually stopping, until just John and Mel are left.
