background
This was first instrumental demo on Simple Minds' Old Chapel Tape
which was recorded in January-February 1983 as preparatory work for Sparkle In The Rain.
It wasn't given a name.
The song is typified by its distinctive synth backing track. The verse melody was eventually
discarded but the chorus became the chorus of Book Of Brilliant Things.
Therefore it could viewed as the demo version of this song.
Simple Minds returned to this arrangement, and sampled the
synth backing track, for the Electroset version which was played live
during the Greatest Hits + (2013) and
subsequent tours.
This officially recorded demo hasn't been released in any form. However, an earlier
jam recorded during the Old Chapel Sessions (by just Charlie,
Mick and a drum machine with
Jim sitting in) was leaked to the
Internet. (See: Book Of Brilliant Things Demo.) This is close
to the official demo, but of poorer quality. (The trio can also be heard considering a
name for the song at the end of this recording, and Charlie
suggests "One.")
