freedom angel

background
Originally written by one of the Italian DJs hanging around the group during the Cry sessions, Charlie simply added a guitar line, and Jim came up with the lyrics.

It was duly recorded for a session on Billy Sloan's radio show. Broadcast on the 14th April 2002, just before the Floating World Tour, the song was a suprise inclusion alongside New Sunshine Morning (subsequently released as New Sunrise) and She Moved Through The Fair.

A curious, semi-acoustic piece, it featured haunting vocals from an unknown female singer.

However, it turned out that the original melody was based on Aegian Sea by Aphrodite's Child (released on their 666 album in 1971). Jim was unaware of the fact, but when playing both songs, it simply sounded like Simple Minds had taken the Aphrodite's Child song and added lyrics to it.

Therefore the song was quietly forgotten for over a decade.

It was reworked in 2017 and proposed for the band's next studio album.
