kenny hyslop
musician: drums
associated with band: October 1981 - February 1982

Kenny Hyslop Kenny Hyslop was born Kenneth John Hyslop on the 14th February 1951 in Helensburgh.

He joined the band Salvation with Midge Ure, which later became Slik. He then went on to play with the The Zones, who recorded a single for Zoom Records, which is when Kenny came to Bruce Findlay's attention.

After The Zones broke up, Kenny became the drummer for The Skids, whose path crossed Simple Minds several times in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

When Brian McGee announced his departure from the band, Bruce enlisted Kenny to play for the forthcoming Sons And Fascination tour. Jim had concerns about taking on a 'permanent' new drummer.

"Their original drummer, Brian McGee, had left just as the Sons And Fascination album was coming out. There was a world tour to go along with it so I got drafted in to do that. It was just for the tour really. - Kenny Hyslop, Uncut Magazine, February 2013

Whilst on tour, he would record local radio stations on his walkman, especially those playing megamixes and the new house music. Whilst in New York, he recorded a song which would inspire the band's next single. "I tuned into this long megamix on Kiss FM and a track called 'Too Through' by Bad Girls came on. I liked the sound of it so I pressed record and play, and quickly fell in love with it. Eventually, halfway through the tour Jim asked 'What's that thing you keep listening to on your Walkman?'" - Kenny Hyslop, Uncut Magazine, February 2013

Before he left the group, Kenny recorded one song with Simple Minds, and one which he inspired. He used to record late night music shows, the cassettes being played on the tour bus. One show featured a funk track, and everyone was taken by a particular riff in the music played by the brass. As an idea, it wouldn't go away, and in January 1982, Kenny recorded the resulting Promised You A Miracle with them.

Following his departure from Simple Minds, Hyslop formed Set The Tone with bass player Bobby Paterson. Following the demise of Set The Tone, Hyslop formed the One O'Clock Gang which released an album on Arista records without significant commercial success. He went on to be credited on a number of singles and albums, including some by Midge Ure. However, after becoming disillusioned with the music industry, Hyslop became an alternative DJ until leaving the UK for Canada with blues band Big George And The Business. In 1999, after returning to the UK Kenny Hyslop started teaching drumming at Carlton Studios in Glasgow as well as producing new music. -->
