A lone masked dancer appears in a hall of mirrors. As key points during the dance, he transforms, first into a swirling purple smoke and finally into a molten pool of gold. At random points, the video glitches, either pixelating the image or revealing glimpses of an underlying test card – both being references to the album artwork.

"The main inspiration came from a phrase that I like: "smoke and mirrors." The source of the phrase is based on magicians' illusions, where magicians make objects appear or disappear by extending or retracting mirrors amid a distracting burst of smoke. We wanted to show Magic in a more elemental way, playing with primordial elements like air and water."

"The video clip is 100% 3D animated. We used motion capture to record several passes of the dancer interpreting the song in various ways. Once we got the performance, we then created the two main scenarios and the model for the character, along with the mask. The mask was an important element for us, since we wanted to have some sort of ageless, mysterious character as our lead."

"The transformation of our character into smoke and water was the most complicated part, but at the same time the most fun one to make, trying to balance mesmerizing visuals and at the same time trying to retain as much of the dance was the challenge.

trivia
Normally a background of rotating mirrors would’ve been a nightmare for the production team. Avoiding reflections of the equipment and crew would’ve been a difficult job. Considering that no such reflections were seen suggests that it was all achieved using computer animation.

The dancer turned into a purple swirling mist and then into a molten gold liquid. It’s probably coincidence but these were the primary colours of New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84).

The video is backed by an exclusive edited version of the album track.
