wall of love (demo)

background
Monitor Mix #1 is a blistering performance but, as a monitor mix, it is unbalanced in parts. The lyrics and bass are really high in the mix with everything else faded into the background. The lyrics are still being worked on, but many of the elements of the final song are there. The song starts to fade, before coming back in for the final coda when then it finally finishes hesitantly. But it's still a great version.

Monitor Mix #2 Instrumental is more mellow, but is still a great version. It's got a new intro and outro (which weren't used for the final album recording) and this take is complete. Monitor Mix #3 Instrumental has roughly the same arrangement, but there's added instrumentation in places, and it's a much better version.

Rough #1 is a slightly poorer and rougher recording and the vocals are buried in the mix. Whilst the instrumentation is almsot the same as the final album track, the lyrics are slightly different. It starts with the drummer's count-in and fades out at the end.

12" Vibe begins as a simple keyboard and guitar driven instrumental with the emphasis on keyboards. Drums come in at the start of the second verse. This stripped down idea is unfortunately missing the first seconds. A second version seems to start midway through, whilst a third attempt of the coda appears separately at the end and cuts out suddenly. A fourth segment near the end reveals this as an interesting backing track which was never fully recorded.

Dalkenth #1 is almost the final album take. There's still more work to be done on the lyrics, which are missing the first chorus, and still have some subtle differences, but the track is otherwise complete. Dalkenth #1 Instrumental is the instrumental version of this take.

lyrics
Monitor Mix #1:
Oh great wall of love - it's not good enough.

Oh great wall of love, oh great wall of love.
And when the blind man sings about the perfect things,
I'm afraid it's not good enough.

I need you now. And I want you now. And I need you now. And I want you now.

Ah we wait till daylight hours,
We wait for a sign from you.
Come to the hungry in the gutter,
We've deprived them bread and butter.
It's not, not good enough.

Great wall of love, oh great wall of love.
And when the blind man sings about the peaceful things,
And you shout that it's not good enough.

Well, I need you now. And I want you now. And I need you now.

Ah well it's not the sound of ghosts I hear,
It's the devil with his chainsaw here.
And I'll be running through the ghettos,
Through the townships of Soweto,
No, it's not good enough.
No, it's not good enough.

Oh great wall of love, build me a great wall of love.
Don't try to shoot me down,
I'm not going to hang around.
It's not good, good enough.

Wall of Love.

I need you now. And I want you now. Well I need you now.

They've got silver and diamonds,
They've got paradise around them,
They've got blue skies so clear.
They've got their prisoner in a wagon,
While the children chase the dragon,
And the free bird files so clear.
It files away.
Fly away.
Fly away.

Oh great wall of love, build me a great wall of love.
And when the blind man sings over the horror of things,
And you shout that it's not good enough.

Oh great wall of love, a great wall of love.
When I hear the sound, I'm not going to hang around,
It's not, not, not good enough.

I'll be running,
And I'm running,
And I'll be running.
Oh, it's not, not enough.
When the blind man sings about the perfect things,
And you shout that it's not good enough.
They say now it's not enough.

Build me a great wall wall, build me a great wall of love.
When the blind man sings, it's not good enough.

I'll be running,
And I'll be running,
And I'll be running.

And when I hear the sound.

And I'll be running through villages and ghettos,
Through the townships of Soweto,
I'll hear you now,
It's not enough.

And the free bird flies so high.

Rough #1:
Oh great wall of love, build me a great wall of love.
When the blind man sings about the peaceful things,
You shout that it's not good enough.

Ah we wait till daylight hours,
Waiting for a sign from you.
And to the hungry in the gutter,
We've deprived them bread and butter.
Always not enough,
No not enough.

Great wall of love, build me a great wall of love.
You try to put me down, I wanna be around,
You shout that it's not good enough.

Ah well it's not the sound of ghosts I hear,
It's the devil with his chainsaw,
And I'll be running through the ghettos,
Through the townships of Soweto,
Always not enough,
No not enough.

Oh great wall of love, build me a great wall of love.
You try to put me down, I wanna be around,
It's not enough.

Oh great wall of love, build me a great wall of love.
When the blind man sings about heartbreak and things,
You shout that it's not good enough.

So listen to me darling,
They've got worries they've got troubles on their mind,
And when you see them reaching out,
They're reaching out for something they can't find.

They've got silver and diamonds,
They've got paradise around them,
They've got blue skies so clear.
They've got their prisoner in a wagon,
While the children chase the dragon,
And the free bird files so clear.
It files away.
Fly fly fly away.
It flies away.

And may your sweet lips always talk to me,
Let the bells ring wherever freedom be,
One babe is born and another one dies,
There's people making love tonight.
People making love tonight.
Ah people making love tonight.

Dalkenth #1:
Ah we wait till daylight hours,
Waiting for a sign from you.
Golden temples concrete towers,
Building mansions on the hillside next to you.
In the city souls awaken bodies shaking,
Oh pull me up let me see the view.
And to the hungry in the gutter,
We've deprived them bread and butter.
Always not enough,
No not enough.

Great wall of love, build me a great wall of love.
When the blind man sings about the peaceful things,
You shout that it's still not enough.

Ah well it's not the sound of ghosts I hear,
It's the devil with his chainsaw,
And I'll be running through the ghettos,
Through the townships of Soweto,
This world is breaking up.

Brothers missing, babies kissing,
And the thing that got to you,
Burning never turning next to you.

Oh great wall of love,
Build me a great wall of love.
When the blind man sings about the peaceful things,
You shout that it's still not enough.

So listen to me darling,
They've got worries they've got troubles on their mind,
And when you hear them reaching out,
They're reaching out for something they can't find.

Oh I believe one great day the rain will come,
And wash this mess away.
Oh I believe one great day the rain will come.

They've got silver and diamonds,
They've got paradise around them,
They've got blue skies so clear.
They've got their prisoner in a wagon,
While the children chase the dragon,
And the free bird files so clear.
It files away.

And may your sweet lips always talk to me,
Let the bells ring wherever freedom be,
One babe is born and another one dies,
There's people making love tonight.
People making love tonight.
Ah people making love tonight.
People making love.
People making love tonight.
People making love.
I can hear them reaching out.
I can hear them reaching out.
I can hear them reaching out.
I can hear them reaching out.
