background
A fragment of what would eventually become When Spirits Rise
appears at the end of Sun City of Reel Ten
of the Street Fighting Years tapes.
It's just a brief snatch of some keyboard synths and studio chatter. But this short improvisation bares
some similarities with When Spirits Rise and also the
opening keyboards of Biko
The rest of the recording has been taped over.
Three different mixes appear on Street Fighting Years: LP Tracks: The Lament. Each
track is recorded twice; the second copy being a backup. Straight Mix #1 is almost the same as the final
album version but with extra instrumentation during the introduction,
slight echo on the bagpipe synths and an extra repeated section during the main part of the song. The other two
mixes are both derived from this mix.
Straight Mix #1 With Mutes drops all the other instrumentation execpt the bagpipes when they first
appear and then during the main part of the song.
Straight Mix #1 Edit simply drops the introduction altogether and the song starts with the bagpipes.
