sometimes when it rains (demo)

composer
Words and music: Simple Minds

background
One of the more euphoric demos from this period, Sometimes When It Rains is a lengthy instrumental demo. Very much in the style of the Street Fighting Years material, it features Charlie, Mick, John and Mel. The track does have a discernable verse-chorus structure and is classic Simple Minds.

It first appears as the second track of the first reel of the Street Fighting Years library in the Virgin Archive. However, it is not a good recording, and suffers from distortion and lack of clarity. The second version, which appears as the fifth track, is a slightly better recording and features lots of different ideas - including the lengthy new coda which is instantly recognisable as Take A Step Back.

Monitor Mix #1 moves the song on with more instrumentation. Unlike other songs at this point, it still doesn't have lyrics although it has a basic song structure including verses, choruses, middle-eight and Take A Step Back coda. It starts coming to a faltering end before the recording suddenly cuts out.

Rough #2 Instrumental is further recording of the track which is still brimming with new ideas and improvisations. It's missing the Take A Step Back coda (as the band were probably concentrating on it as a separate song now) and just features the verses and choruses of the original song. The mix is rather unbalanced and it fades quickly before the end of the song.
