soul crying out (demo)

composer
Words and music: Simple Minds

publisher
© 1989 Virgin Music (Publishers) Ltd

background
This early instrumental demo of Soul Crying Out is notable as it has the same arrangement as the final recorded version (although Charlie can be heard experimenting into the fade.) It features Charlie, Mick and John and Mel.

It first appears as the sixth track of the first reel of the Street Fighting Years library in the Virgin archive. However, it is not a good recording, and suffers from distortion and lack of clarity. Unfortunately there's also a five second gap around the 2:00 mark making this version unreleasable.

Monitor Mix #1 is of much better quality, includes the complete song, and some of the final lyrics (although they still needed some work). This take had a slightly slower tempo, and sparse instrumentation, but most of the key features of the song were there (even including the whistle going into the coda).

Monitor Mix #2 Instrumental was recorded in July 1988. The song was now very close to its final album form, but there were slight differences throughout with all the instruments. Unfortunately the bass is rather too high in the mix. No whistle before the coda and features the "silly" bass ending.

Monitor Mix #2 is the same as above but with lyrics. These are mostly close to the final recorded version but there are still some subtle differences, and the first verses are particularly mumbled and are more like guide vocals. The whistle is now back before the coda.

Monitor Mix #3 features the same lyrical take as Monitor Mix #2. However the mix is diferent with only the guitar and keyboards present during verse two. Monitor Mix #3 Instrumental is just an instrumental version of the same mix.

Monitor Mix #4 features the same vocal take again, but the mix is different again, and the instrumentation is even across the whole track (the guitars and keyboards are part of the mix in the second verse now). However, some of the instrumentation is different during the coda, particularly the guitar. By now the song is very close to its final album take. Monitor Mix #4 Instrumental is just the instrumental version of this take.

Monitor Mix #5 is almost the final form of the song. The instrumentation is complete and the lyrics are clear and not mumbled. The words are the same as the final album take with the exception of the line: "Boy you've got to dig, to see what you can find.."

Rough #1 is much the same as Monitor Mix #5 and includes the alternative line of "Boy you've got to dig, to see what you can find.." Extra violins have been added to the second verse and chorus - it's very subtle - but they were removed for the final mix. Strings features the extra violins in all their glory - but they've been loudly added to the right stereo channel only - most of them were removed for the final mix. Strings Instrumental is the same mix, with the new strings in the right channel only, but with no vocals.

The song was considered for the fourth-and-final single from the album as an edit version was prepared in September 1989. However, not much was trimmed from the track, as only scarce edits were made to the main body of the song and the lengthy coda was left intact.

lyrics
Monitor Mix #1
Listen to the silence,
Ringing in the streets,
There's a crowd of people,
Gathered to meet.

What's going on?
I said something's going wrong.

Into the valleys,
Into the streets,
There's a cold wind blowing,
Into your heat.

Some getting here.
And I can hear what people said.

[Improvised verse]
And the Government says you're gonna pay, pay, pay.

And you pay,
Still you pay.

And there's a soul crying out,
And the people crying out.
It's the land crying out,
And I can hear you crying out.

And I say, I don't know.
Anyway.
I don't know.
Gotta get out of here.
And I say,
Going any place.
Some sweet day,
Some sweet day,
Any day.

I can hear them,
Coming into the street.
There's a crowd of people,
Gathered to meet.
Something's going well,
And I can hear what they say.

I see the woman, with tears in her eyes,
I hear the baby, calling in the night.
Something on the bed, was it something she said?
This is not right,
What goes on through the night?

I hear her coming, into your head,
Sweet common love, so hard to find.
Someone said, man that's sad,
And the people walk by, cos they're so blind.

And you pay,
And you pay.
And you pay.
It's just the land crying out.
It's just the people crying out.
And the earth's crying out.
And I can hear you crying out.
And I can fear them crying out.

And the Government says.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Baby - I don't care.
Don't you think though.
I don't care.
Some sweet day.
Any day.
Something.
I don't think out of here.

Some sweet day.
Get me home.
Out of here.

Some sweet day.

I come walking to you,
I come singing to you.

Some sweet day.
I'm gonna walk away,
I'm gonna walk away.

It's just a soul crying out.
It's just the land crying out.
It's just the children crying out.
All the babies crying out.

Any way, some sweet day,
I'm gonna walk away,
Turn away.

It's just the soul crying out.
It's just the land crying out.
Anyway.

I wanna hear,
I want you here,
Some sweet day.

I can here you say.
I'm gonna walk away,
Any day.

Just a soul crying out,
Of a land crying out anyway.
Anyway.

When you say,
Some sweet day.

Monitor Mix #2 / Monitor Mix #3 / Monitor Mix #4
Listen to the rhythm,
Listen to the street,
There's a cold wind blowing,
Into the street.

Soul's crying out,
And people crying out.

In through the valleys,
In through the streets,
There's a whole wind going,
Up through the street.

I said something's going on,
I said what is going wrong?

I hear her coming, in to your head,
There's an old woman calling, into your head,
Something said,
Something said,
And the Government says you're gonna pay, pay, pay.

And you pay.

It's just a soul crying out,
It's just the people crying out.
It's the land crying out,
And I can hear you crying out.

And I say, I don't know,
Maybe I don't care.
I don't know,
I gotta get out of here.
And I said,
Going any place.
Some sweet day,
Some sweet day,
Any day.

Oh... I can hear the lovers, whisper in the street,
See a crowd has gathered underneath the heat.
I said "What's going on",
And I hear what they said.

I see the woman, with tears in her eyes,
I hear the baby, calling in the night.
Something on the bed, was it something she said?
This is not right,
What goes on through the night?

I hear her coming, in to your head,
Sweet common love, so hard to find.
Someone said, man that's sad,
And the people walk by, cos they're so blind.

And you pay,
And you pay.

It's just a soul crying out,
It's just the people crying out.
It's the earth crying out,
And I can hear you crying out.
And I can feel you crying out.

And the government said,
I don't know.
Maybe I don't care.
All I know is, I gotta get out of here,
Any way.
Do you know, some place to go?
I'm getting out of here.

And you know, some place to go?
I'm getting out of here.

I come walking to you,
I come singing to you.
Some sweet day.
I'm gonna walk away,
I'm gonna walk away.

It's just the soul crying out.
It's just the land crying out.
It's just the children crying out.
All the babies crying out.

Any way, some sweet day,
I'm gonna get away,
Turn away.

It's just the soul crying out.
It's just the land crying out.
Any way.

I wanna hear,
I want you here,
Some sweet day.

Just a soul crying out,
Of a land crying out anyway.
When you say,
Some sweet day...

Monitor Mix #5
Listen to the rhythm,
Listen to the beat,
It has a cold wind blowing,
Up through the street.

Soul crying out,
People crying out.

In through the valleys,
In through the streets,
Feel the whole world moving,
Underneath our feet.

Something's going on,
I said what is going wrong?

I feel them coming,
So close behind.
Boy you've got to dig, to see what you can find.
The man he says, that's OK,
And the Government says you're gonna pay, pay, pay.

And you pay,
Still you pay.

It's just a soul crying out,
It's just the people crying out.
It's the land crying out,
And I can hear you crying out.

And I say, I don't know,
Maybe I don't care.
What I know is,
I gotta get out of here.
And I'm going,
Going any day.
Some sweet day,
Some sweet day,
I gotta find a way.

I can hear the lovers, whisper in the street,
See a crowd has gathered underneath the heat.
I hear what they say,
But I don't believe what they say.

I see the woman, with tears in her eyes,
I hear the baby, calling in the night.
Something on the bed, was it something she said?
Hell this is not right,
What goes on through the night?

I hear her coming, all in my mind,
Sweet common love, so hard to find.
Someone said, man that's sad,
And the people walk by, cos they're so blind.

And you pay,
Still you pay.

It's just a soul crying out,
Just the people crying out.
It's the earth crying out,
And I can hear you crying out.
And I can feel you crying out.

And I say, I don't know,
Maybe I don't care.
All I know is, I gotta get out of here,
And I'm going, going any way.
Do you know, some place to go?
I'm getting out of here.

Where will I find some peace of mind?
I'm getting out of here.

I come walking to you,
I come singing to you.
Some sweet day.
I'm gonna walk away,
I'm gonna walk away.

It's just the soul crying out.
It's just the land crying out.
It's just the children crying out.
All the babies crying out.

Any way, some sweet day,
I'm gonna walk away,
Turn away.

It's just the soul crying out.
It's just the land crying out.

I wanna hear,
I want you here,
Some sweet day.

Just a soul crying out,
Of a land crying out anyway.
