background
The Monitor Mix #1 recording, which was committed to tape on the 18th May 1982, is extremely bass and drum heavy. Jim sings lyrics, which are close to the final recorded version. It doesn't differ much from the album version except for a count in, extended outro, the use of a drum machine (similar to the session version) and some extra drumming emphasis by Mike Ogletree. There are also extra synths and ideas at the end over the extra long fade.

Monitor Mix #2 Fragment is part of the recording of the same track on another part of the tape. Only a tiny part is still present, but it's very similar to Monitor Mix #1. The first part has been overrecorded by other, newer material whilst the sudden ending sounds like a tape jam.

Rough Mix #1 was recorded on the 30th May 1982. It is still extremely bass and drum heavy. Jim sings lyrics, which are close to the final recorded version. It doesn't differ much from the album version except for a count in, extended outro, the use of a drum machine (similar to the session version) and some extra drumming emphasis by Mike Ogletree.

Reel Fifteen of the New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) sessions includes two separate recordings of the end section of the song. These are interesting as there's no fade - the band just come to a hesitant halt. This is followed on the tape by the full eight minutes long instrumental version; which also includes a count in and Pete Walsh stating "Rolling."

King Is White And In The Crowd

lyrics
Talking by the pool of light, language from America.
She puts on the film of him, king is white and in the crowd.
They are not a melting pot, say no, say no tapestry.
She puts on the film of him, king is white and in the crowd.

She takes his hand and she says you'll stay.
She's lost in the crowd.
King.

Wire them up, fire them up,
The life and times, the art and talk.
Wire them up, fire them up,
The life and times, the art and talk.

Lovers run camp Africa, bars in town are civilised.
She puts on the film of him, king is white and in the crowd.
Panorama, city life.
Youth's dance proud from the waist down.
She puts on the film of him, king is white and in the crowd.

Shot from where the action is, a rhapsody in black and blue.
She puts on the film of him, king is white and in the crowd.
Love lies under western eyes, powerful yet transient.
She puts on the film of him, king is white and in the crowd.
