background
This was the first title for New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84), conceived during
jamming sessions at a Fife farmhouse in early 1982.
Charlie said "we pictured it as being something like
Kraftwerk, motorway music." In fact, the song does share some riffs with
Kraftwerk's Autobahn.
They even recorded the song onto the audio track of a Jean-Michel Jarre video.
"It was great watching him doing his concerts in China with "Festival Riff" coming
out" - Pete Walsh.
Rough Mix #1 is the first recording of the track in Virgin's
archive. This early instrumental mix, recorded on the 30th May 1982, includes all the elements
of the track. Some of Charlie's riffs are in
different parts of the track and he also experiments more during the end. It also features a
count-in and ends suddenly.
Tk1 Fragment is a brief short extract of the extended version of
the song, but includes extra lyrics. It can be found at the end of
Reel 7 of the album tapes, which
was recored on the 3rd August 1982.
Reel 9, which was recorded on the 14th August 1982, includes
Tk1 Full Duration. It is similar to the German 12" Remix but this take differs as it
includes extra percussion at the start, and and extra verse towards the end. (A fragment of this appears on
Reel 7). Only the Tk2 Edit Sections remain of the second
take, which was extracted to the album master tape.
The Tk1 Full Duration Instrumental appears on Reel 10
along with the long fade used for the Edit version of the song.
