background
An obscure live recording surfaced back in the 2000s. This was supposedly from The Rotter's Club in Manchester, taped in 1979, but no record of that gig could be found. But the set-list was definitely from that era: probably when Simple Minds were supporting Magazine in early 1979.

The greatest surprise on the tape was the first song, a mysterious frenzied piano piece, driven by Mick MacNeil's synths. When I asked Mick about the song, he said it was called Hell, and had been specially written for the band's first BBC Sesion on the 2nd April 1979.

The session remains unreleased and unbootlegged; and all that currently exists of this song is a badly recorded fragment.
