background
This song was demoed for Black And White 050505.
"Courtesy of Charlie Burchill and Gordy Goudie, I wrote a song
the other day and I am thrilled as to how it has developed. It is called Home.
The notion behind the words of this song, comes from the idea that a few months before it
is born, a child has the most perfect enlightened consciousness with regards to its environment.
Spiritually speaking, at that point of existence the unborn child is in a total perfect paradise state!
Home, uses metaphors to describe an imagined return journey to that consciousness." - Jim
"There are a number of songs on the album that will make great singles but I feel that
the way Home kicks in with Charlie's signature soaring guitar riff, there could be no better
way off announcing to the world that Simple Minds had recaptured the kind of uplifting
musical spirit that defined our best work. Lyrically, Home is a pop song with a spiritual heart,
taking us on a secret journey through the thoughts of someone who is desperately seeking out their own inner crusade. - Jim
Several interviewers and commentators have suggested that the song's about Taormina which is incorrect.
The original Trixton Porteno Mix featured the melody of Theme For Great Cities. Not wanting to
approach EMI for permission, the track was very subtly altered, sampled and replayed - so it's almost
Theme but not quite!
"Home is great. As soon as you hear Charlie's riff, you’re hooked. It could have been a classic riff by
Magazine and Banshees guitarist John McGeoch. We keep adding new chapters. They refresh the story. You
don't feel like a museum piece. Charlie and I have been music fans since as long as I can recall. We still are."

|
God gave me travelling shoes,
God gave me the wanderer’s eye,
God gave me a few gold coins to help me to the other side.
Looked around and said "Be careful how the small things grow,"
God gave me travelling shoes,
And I knew it was time to go.
Sent in the ship at night,
To take me to the hidden port.
Found me the key at last,
To open up the prison door.
Brought down the blackbird's wings,
Gifted me with beggar's eyes.
Sent in the jackals,
To tell me I should say bye, bye, bye.
I'm home,
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home.
And I'm home,
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home.
But I'm miles and miles and miles,
Miles and miles away.
Where can I hide?
God gave me one last chance,
Gave me one last reprieve.
Jah gave me hunger,
Gave me the air to breath.
Gave me one suitcase,
Gave me one last goodbye.
Gave me travelling shoes,
Without them I would surely die.
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home.
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home.
I'm miles and miles and miles,
Miles and miles away.
I'm miles and miles and miles,
Miles and miles away.
Where do I go?
Where can I hide?
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home.
And I'm home,
Home,
Home,
Home,
Home.
And I'm miles away.
Miles away.
Miles away.
