billy worton
roadcrew chief, sound engineer
associated with band: march 1979 - september 1981

Brought in by Arista for the Life In A Day tour tour, Billy Worton was a confident, experienced roadcrew manager and sound engineer. For his first tour with the Simple Minds, he simply looked after the crew, but he became growingly discontented with sound engineer David Henderson.

It was during the European leg of the Real To Real Cacophony tour that he had a public showdown with David, leading to the band's original sound engineer leaving the group, and Billy taking on the new role.

However, his deparature from the band was also after a public showdown. The sound at the Hammersmith Odeon gig in September 1981 was, by all accounts, atrocious, made doubly worse that the concert was recorded by Virgin. Billy was fired on the spot.
